Abstract

Interpretation can be defined in a nutshell as conveying ideas of the speaker. It is very useful because a speaker will express his ideas in his/her mother tongue very clearly and at the same time it is understood best by the listeners in their native language. Further, the speaker will display a successful diplomacy or communication in his own language. But all speakers will not be able to learn all the languages due to lack of time and interest or linguistic talent. Therefore an interpreter has to help the speaker in order to make the listeners understand his/her speech. The interpreter has to convey the ideas of the speaker given in one linguistic structure of the listeners by reconstruction. Furthermore an interpreter has to take into account the following aspects like intonation behaviors, facial and body gestures, pattern of discourse and also the situational dynamics, regarding the linguistic event According to the view of Seleskovitch the interpreter can discard the original wording and retained only the ideas or sense of the speaker’s text. The reason is that a word may have multiple meanings but the interpreter has to select the correct meaning to suit in the specific context. In short the interpreter has to identify the meaning of the source text which is very closely tied to a single communication event in a particular context to enable the listeners to understand them perfectly. “All knowledge that is about human society, and not about the natural word, is historical knowledge, and therefore it rests upon judgment and interpretation.
